Abstract

927,514. Ciphering. ANSTALT EUROPAISHE HANDELGESELLSCHAFT. June 8, 1959 [June 7, 1958], No. 19554/59. Class 146 (2). The cryptographic device keying mechanism described in Specification 742,181 is modified to ensure that while the keying members are irregularly advanced no combination will recur until all possible other combinations have occurred once. Thus the slide bar drum 14 is provided with a lug 6 which ensures that the first key wheel 9 is advanced one step every revolution and the actuating slide bars 1-3 are provided with lugs 5, to engage the intermediate wheels 7, so positioned in relation to lugs 4, which displace the slide bars to their operative position, that the bars are only placed in an operative position by a control member 8 associated with a preceding keying member and not by a control member associated with a following keying member. Thus if in a revolution of the drum 14 a pin 13 on the wheel 9 is in an operative position all the bars 1-3 will be moved to their operative position to operate each keying wheel 10-12 while if a pin 13 is not operative on the wheel 9 but is on the wheel 10 only the bars 1, 2 will be moved. In modifications instead of the key wheels being used to control a ciphering teletypewriter as described in Specification 742,181 a mechanism can be controlled in response to the position of the slide bars or alternatively the key wheels may be constructed as electric commutators. Further modifications may include the provision of fixed bars on the drum 14 which give additional steps to the intermediate wheels 7 during each drum revolution while the whole device may be electro-mechanical or purely electrical instead of mechanical. Specification 455,333 also is referred to.
