Abstract

927,352. Luminescent materials and processing. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. April 6, 1961 [April 7, 1960], No. 12394/60. Class 39 (1). A method of manufacturing a halophosphate comprises subjecting the phosphate ingredient in powder form to a classification process and selecting only those particles within a required particle size range, heating a mixture of the ingredients and pulverizing and reclassifying the product. A halophosphate of the general formula 3M 3 (PO 4 ) 2 .M<SP>1</SP>L 2 , where M, M<SP>1</SP> are each one or more of the alkaline earth metals calcium, strontium, barium, and L is a halogen or a mixture of halogens, is prepared by heating together phosphates of the metals M, halides of the metals M<SP>1</SP>, compounds of the activator metals, e.g. antimony, tin, lead with or without manganese, and, if desired, compounds of M decomposable by heat to give the oxides of M, in the proportions required to give the halophosphate composition. The classification process may include an elutriation process as described in Specification 868,711 or a process involving the use of one or more hydrocyclones, as described in Specifications 927,351 and 927,354 and a particle size within the range 5- 25 microns is selected for use. A detailed example is described in which M is Ca and M<SP>1</SP> is composed of 82% Ca and 18% Sr.
