Abstract

An improvement in the process for the manufacture of a strengthened hollow body of thermoplastic material by continuous expansion and subsequent cooling of the heated hollow body by means of a tempering bath, the expansion being carried out by internal pressure and within a temperature range which is limited on the one hand by the temperature at which a neck formation is just avoided and on the other hand by the temperature of the crystallite melting point, comprises subjecting the hollow body within the tempering bath to an external pressure at least partially counterbalancing the internal pressure. The difference between the pressures preferably does not exceed \sB20% calculated on the internal pressure and is preferably nought. The hollow body may be a tube of polyethylene, polypropylene, a mixture thereof, ethylene-propylene copolymer, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride or a mixture of polyvinyl chloride with halogenated polyolefins. The hollow body may be heated by immersing it in a hot liquid, e.g. glycol, and external pressure applied by applying pressure to the liquid. Apparatus for carrying out the process is described.
