Class 2(5) [Also in Groups IV(b) and V] An improvement or modification of the process for the manufacture of polymeric materials claimed in the parent Specification comprises the incorporation as the compound containing a halogen or phosphorus atom and at least one isocyanate-reactive group in the molecule, of at least one isocyanate-reactive acidic reaction product of phosphorus trichloride or phosphorus tribromide with from 1À2 to 2À0 molecular proportions of an aliphatic dihydric alcohol containing not more than four carbon atoms per molecule. The acidic reaction products are advantageously used in the form of their salts, especially with amino compounds, such as triethanolamine. The polyurethanes may be homogeneous or cellular, foamed products being obtained by using water or fluorocarbons or polyesters having carboxyl end groups in the reaction mixture. Polyesters, polyesteramides and polyethers suitable as starting materials are described. Tertiary amine catalysts, surface-active agents, colouring matters and fillers such as carbon black may be added to the reaction mixture. In examples the phosphorus compounds used are (2), (4), (8) bis(O-#-chloroethyl hydrogen phosphite); (3), (5) a differently prepared phosphorus trichloride/ethylene glycol reaction product; (6) and (7) bis(O-#-chloroethyl hydrogen phosphite) neutralized with aqueous ammonia and triethanolamine, respectively; (9) a reaction product of phosphorus trichloride and butane-1,4 diol. In Example (8) the diphenylmethane diisocyanate composition and the bis- (O-#-chloroethyl hydrogen phosphite) are reacted together, before the remaining components are added to the reaction mixture.
