Abstract

D 1,4-3-keto-steroids are prepared by treatment of 3-keto-steroids saturated in ring A with 2,3-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone which may be substituted with chlorine in the 5 and/or 6 position. Examples describe the preparation of prednisone-21-acetate, D 1,4-3,17-diketo-androstadiene, D 1,4-3-keto- 17b -hydroxyandrostadiene 17 propionate, and D 1,4-diketo-11a ,17a , 21-trihydroxy- 16a -methyl-pregnadiene 21-acetate.
