Abstract
926,341. Valves. F. E. SWAIN. Dec. 22, 1959 [Dec. 24, 1958; March 31, 1959], Nos. 41619/58 and 10744/59. Class 135. A butterfly valve comprises a closure member 5 secured to a shaft 7 and rotatable in a housing 8. The housing is formed with a recess 9 which receives a seating ring 10 of resilient material adjusted by a sleeve 11 to expand or contract to adjust the diameter and interference fit between the ring and the closure member initially and thereafter to compensate for wear. In the embodiment shown the ring is of S-shaped cross-section, the innermost limb 10a being movable radially into the bore as the ring is compressed. The sleeve 11 may be adjusted externally of the valve through a worm gearing 13. In modified forms, the sealing ring may be a hollow tube filled with fluid, be formed of an inner and outer wedgeshaped rings whose mating surfaces are inclined to the axis of the housing, or may be formed by a ring of trapezial cross-section having a frusto-conical sealing surface. The sealing surface 6 of the closure member is preferably spherical shaped. The closure member may be rotated about an axis at right angles to or angularly offset from the axis of the housing.
