Abstract

925,995. Screw-and-nut gearing. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 27, 1961 [May 3, 1960], No. 15589/60. Class 80 (3). In a safety device limiting the fall of a vertical rotatable screw 10, supporting a load such as a machine tool table, following wear or damage of the threads between the screw 10 and its fixed nut 11, an idle nut 18, which on failure of the nut 11 can seat on a thrust bearing 17 to support the load, is coupled non-rotatably to the nut 11 by pins 20 which uncouple after an amount a of axial movement. The distance a is equal to the amount of wear expected before failure of the nut threads. As wear occurs in the nut 11 the nut 18 moves closer to the bearing 17. As the nut fails the screw falls a distance A-a to seat nut 18 on bearing 17. During the fall the pins 20 become disconnected so that subsequent rotation of the screw 10 does not raise or lower the load, thereby indicating the failure of the nut 11. An aperture 21 allows inspection of the spacing A, which indicates the extent of wear in the nut 11. The pin connection 20 may be replaced by a splined or castellated connection.
