Abstract

925,591. Packaging-machines. LILLESHALL CO. Ltd. Aug. 31, 1959 [May 30, 1958], No. 17261/58. Class 94(1). [Also in Group XXX] A machine for packing bottles &c. into crates assembles the bottles with their axes vertica in groups, turns them to the horizontal position and lowers them into the crates. The machine may reverse successive groups to form oppositely facing super posed layers. Bottles 10 are fed by a con veyer 12 to one of a pair of co extensive channels C3, C4 carriec on a transfer head C1 capable o: movement transverse to the con veyer. Grippers C5 engage and slightly retract the leading bottle on the conveyer when a channel is full, and the head C1 moves tc present the group so formed to one of a pair of pushers C6, and bring the empty channel into line with the conveyer. The pusher C6 moves the group into one of a pair of channel shaped members D1, which member then pivots through 90 degrees to bring the bottles to the horizontal position. Above the members D1 is a horizontally' reciprocatable carriage E from which depend sets of grippers E3, E4. The carriage moves so that one of these sets grips the bottle necks and moves to withdraw them horizontally until they are positioned above a crate A1. The gripper set then descends to deposit them in the crate. The above sequence has meanwhile been repeated on the opposite side of the machine so that the other gripper set may now engage an oppositely facing group of bottles and withdraw and deposit them on the next carriage movement. The crates A1 are advanced by a conveyer A2, and if several layers of bottles are to be formed, a vertically moving platform B 1 raises the crates to maximum filling level and lowers them after each layer or pair of layers has been formed. The gripper sets may have different vertical strokes and/or may be at different levels as shown in Fig. 4. Layers are staggered relative to one another by different positioning of the end walls D2, Fig. 1, of the members D1 with corresponding staggering of the gripper sets E3, E4. The machine is entirely automatic and as described is operated by pneumatic cylinder and piston means throughout.
