924,738. Typewriters &c. INTERNATIONAL COMPUTERS & TABULATORS Ltd. Nov. 15, 1960 [Dec. 21, 1959], No. 43306/59. Class 100 (4). [Also in Group XIX] A type face, Fig. 1, for recording data to be sensed in a record card machine has raised portions 1 adapted to cause an embossment of the paper in certain areas 5, Fig. 2, of the character as shown in Fig. 3. The characters are printed in magnetic ink and the depressed areas 5 produce a signal appreciably less than the rest of the character owing to their greater separation from the sensing head 6. The paper 4 may be guided over the head by a plate 7. Alternatively the sensing head could be on the reverse side of the paper, the depressed areas 5 then producing a larger signal. In another form the type face may be gapped to produce raised portions which are detected by an increased signal. The characters may otherwise be printed in ordinary ink and the depressed areas detected by a pneumatic sensing head in which changes of clearance between it and the surface of the paper cause changes of pressure which are converted into electric signals.
