Abstract
A process for the production of polyamides comprises mixing a monomeric lactam having at least six carbon atoms in the ring with a compound of the formula <FORM:0924573/IV(a)/1> where n is from 0 to 3 inclusive and R and R1 are alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl groups, R and R1 optionally being co-cyclic, and maintaining the mixture at a temperature above its melting point until a solid product is obtained. Accelerators, e.g. organic isocyanates, carbodiimides or acyl halides may be present in the reaction mixture. Specified lactams are S -caprolactam, enantholactam, capryllactam, dodecanolactam, a -methyl-S -caprolactam, b :d -dimethyl caprolactam and b -phenyl-S -caprolactam. Specified lithium aluminium compounds are lithium tris-(diethylamino) aluminohydride, lithium tris-(diphenylamino) aluminohydride, lithium tris-(N-ethyl-N-phenylamino) aluminohydride, lithium bis-(dicyclohexylamino) aluminodihydride, lithium bis-(di-n-propylamino) aluminodihydride, lithium bis-(N-methyl-N-phenylamino) aluminodihydride, lithium (di-isobutylamino) aluminotrihydride, lithium (dibenzylamino) aluminotrihydride and lithium (N-cyclohexyl-N-methylamino) aluminotrihydride. Inert substances, e.g. finely-divided metals, glass fibres or graphite may be included in the reaction mixture. In the examples:- (1) S -caprolactam is polymerized in the presence of lithium tris-(diethylamino) aluminohydride and (2) capryllactam is polymerized in the presence of lithium (di-isobutylamino) aluminotrihydride.
