Abstract
A process for the production of carbides, borides or silicides of elements of Group 3a and 4b of the Periodic Table according to Mendel<\>eeff wherein a charge comprising an intimate mixture of the raw materials from which the desired compound is formed is heated in an electric furnace is characterised in that there is incorporated in the mixture an additive consisting of an alkali or alkaline earth metal, or a compound of an alkali or alkaline earth metal, preferably in an amount of 0,01%-0,3% by weight, to increase the electrical conductivity of the vapour phase in the electric arc. A rare earth metal or compound may be used in place of or in addition to the above referred to additives. The mixture may be used as such, or may at least in part be moulded with the additive (either dry or moist) into lumps. In examples (1) boric acid and petroleum coke are mixed with caustic soda solution, formed into flat cakes, dried, and broken into pieces, and these pieces are then fed to an electric furnace, containing a bed of fused boron carbide, to give boron carbide, (2) sand and water glass are mixed with water, dried, broken up into lumps, and fed into the arc furnace to produce silicon carbide, and (3) boric acid, sand, carbon black, and caustic soda were mixed together with water, dried, broken up into lumps and fed into the furnace to obtain a uniformly fused block of the composition 23,5%C, 28,5%Si, 47,8%B. Aluminium boride may also be made.
