Abstract

The invention comprises a water soluble metallic ion complex comprising one or more reducing sugars and one or more calcium, magnesium, strontium, barium, titanium, vanadium, chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, and/or zinc metal ions wherein the molar ratio of sugar to metal ion is at least 2:1; together with salts of the complex; the preparation thereof by contacting a source of one or more of the above metal ions with one or more reducing sugars in a molar ratio of said reducing sugar to said metal of at least 2:1, and, if desired, adding an alkaline reagent to form a salt of the complex and, further, if desired, isolating the metal ion-reducing sugar complex or its salt from solution; and pharmaceutical and veterinary compositions comprising the said complexes and an inert carrier or diluent (see Group VI).ALSO:Pharmaceutical and veterinary compositions comprise a water-soluble metallic ion complex comprising one or more reducing sugars and one or more calcium, magnesium, barium, strontium, titanium, vanadium, chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper and/or zinc metal ions wherein the molar ratio of sugar to metal ion is at least 2 : 1 or a salt thereof incorporated into human or animal food or drink or in a form suitable for administration orally or by injection. Oral preparations may be pills or tablets, and the animal feeds may contain vitamins and/or antibiotics and/or iodised salt.
