Abstract

A polymer having the unit general formula <FORM:0923584/IV(a)/1> wherein A is N or CH, R is H or CH3, X is -O- or -NH-, R1 and R2 are each an alkyl or aryl radical, Y is a divalent group comprising a direct chain of at least 3 C atoms and may also contain a S atom in the chain, and M is Si or Sn, may be made by reacting together (a) an unsaturated derivative of 1, 3, 5-triazine or of 1, 3-pyrimidine having the general formula <FORM:0923584/IV(a)/2> in which A is N or CH, X is -O- or -NH- and Y1 is an unsaturated group comprising a direct chain of at least 3 C atoms with a single ethylenic double bond in the chain, and (b) a diorgano tin or silicon compound of the formula <FORM:0923584/IV(a)/3> wherein the Z's are H atoms or mercapto groups of the formula -(CH2)n-SH, n being a small number, and R1, R2 and M are as above defined. Reactants specified are 2-methyl-4:6-diallyloxy-1:3:5-triazine, 2-methyl-4:6-diallylamino-1:3:5-triazine, 2-methyl-4:6-diallyloxy-pyrimidine, diethyl tin hydride and diethyl-, diphenyl-, methylphenyl- and dimethyl-bis-(mercaptopropyl)-silanes. The reaction may be effected in the absence or presence of (i) solvents, e.g. tributylamine, tetrahydrofuran, pyran, dioxane, diethyleneglycol dimethylether and ethyleneglycol diethylether, and (ii) catalysts, e.g. organic peroxides, azo-compounds, ultra-violet light (with or without such catalysts), platinum, nickel and hydrochloroplatinic acid, at temperatures varying from room temperature to 200 DEG C. The resulting polymers may be oils, resins, rubbers or amorphous powders. Examples are given.
