923,389. Sewing; sewing-machines. B. LIGHT. Feb. 1, 1962 [Feb. 15, 1961], No. 5711/61. Class 112. A work-holder for use in stitchtogether plies of fabric comprises two flat sheets each formed with a slot constituting a predetermined stitching path, the slots being disposed in registry when the sheets are superposed one on the other, at least one sheet having its inner surface adapted to grip an outer ply of fabric placed between the sheets, guide means being provided on the upper surface of the upper sheet near the end of the stitching path so that by movement of the guide relatively to the presser foot the height of the latter relatively to the former is varied. The upper sheet 1 is of transparent plastics material and has a slot 3 which begins at a downwardly bevelled surface 30 which is engaged by an extension 13 on the presser foot 12 of a sewing-machine to lower the presser foot into the slot as it is moved along a guide edge 31a to commence the sewing operation. An abutment ramp 32 prevents the foot overshooting the surface 30. A ramp 40 extends from a block 41 on the upper surface of the sheet 1 to allow the presser foot to rise out of engagement with the slot 3 at the end of the sewing operation. To prevent splitting of the sheet 1 the ends of the slot are provided with narrow slots terminating in circular apertures, and a pad of laminated plastics material affixed below the aperture (see Fig 5, not shown). The lower sheet 2 is of laminated plastics material and has a slot 4 corresponding with but narrower than the slot 3; abutments 8, 21 and 24 on the lower sheet engage with recesses 9, 20 and 23 in the upper sheet. The lower surface of sheet 1 has pads 6 co-operating with a lining sheet 7 to grip and slightly stretch the fabric plies placed between the sheets. Members 6 and 7 may comprise glass paper of foam plastics material. A guide line on the lower sheet assists the operator to locate the plies. In use on a sewing-machine the slot 4 may be engaged by an upstanding boss formed on the needle plate of the machine. The feeding mechanism of the machine is preferably removed and the device moved manually using the handles 10. Starting and stopping.-The sewing-machine is driven from an electric motor by means of a solenoid-operated clutch controlled by a microswitch which is closed to commence sewing when the presser foot drops into the beginning of the slot 3 and is opened to stop sewing when the ramp 40 lifts the presser foot out of the slot.
