Abstract

923,242. Pole-vault apparatus. G. A. WHITTAKER, and F. WINFIELD. Nov. 20, 1961 [Dec. 2, 1960], No. 41451/60. Class 132 (1). Gymnastic apparatus comprises a pole-vault box or trough which is adapted so that the shock of the pole's impact is absorbed on a resilient buffer which is compressible by a vaulting pole when the pole has been carried and planted by the vaulter at the end of his run up. The buffer comprises a face-plate 1a secured to a layer 1b of resilient material, a reinforcing plate 1c and a resilient layer 1d in contact with a resilient layer 1e secured to a stop board 2. The sides 5 of the box have channels 3 to accommodate the shaped sides of the buffer which is retained by removable reinforcing side plates 4. The base has an upper portion 10 secured to a floor-engaging portion 11. The base has two projections 6 which removably engage in tapered slots 7 in floor plates 8. A layer of resilient material covers the upper parts of the buffer, sides and stop board. The apparatus is used for training for pole vaulting in a gymnasium.
