Abstract

922,912. Automatic control. ALLISCHALMERS MANUFACTURING CO. Oct. 3, 1961 [Oct. 11, 1960], No. 35661/61. Class 38 (4). Deviations in the ratio of power input to material output of a crusher are automatically corrected (a) by variation of the rate of feed of material to the crusher, and (b) by variation of the size to which the material is crushed, when the volume of material in the crusher exceeds a predetermined value. In Fig. 2, the shaft 12 of a crusher is driven by an electric motor 13. Material to be crushed is supplied by a conveyer 16 and the crushed material is removed by a conveyer 18. A strain gauge 20 associated with conveyer 18 produces an electrical signal dependent on the output of the crusher which is indicated by a meter 21. The power input to the crusher is indicated by a wattmeter 29 associated with motor 13. An instrument 30 responsive to both the above measurements indicates the ratio of power input to material output. Under automatic control, when the power/output ratio falls below a desired range of values, instrument 30 applies a signal to a transistor or magnetic amplifier type control circuit 43, 44 so that if the fall persists beyond a predetermined time a motor-operated potentiometer 45 is operated to increase the speed of conveyer 16 in steps until the desired ratio is restored. Should the volume of material in the crusher exceed a predetermined value under these conditions a further circuit 50 is influenced to render circuit 43 ineffective to increase rate of feed and render circuits 48, 52, which are similar to circuits 43, 44, effective instead to operate a motor-operated potentiometer 36 associated with an electro-hydraulic system 59, 14, to raise crusher head 15 and decrease the size of the crushed material by reducing the size of the crushed material which is indicated by an instrument 34. If the power/output ratio should rise above the predetermined range of values, instrument 30 applies a signal to circuits 61, 66 which function in a similar manner to circuits 43, 48 but cause first, decreases in the rate of feed by conveyer 16 and then, if the output from the crusher falls below a predetermined value instrument 21 influences circuits 61, 66 so that the ratio is corrected by increases in the size of the crushed material instead of decreases in the rate of feed. If the hopper above the crusher should fill, a circuit 63 is influenced to cause a periodic decrease in the rate of feed, and if it overfills a circuit 72 is influenced to stop the feed entirely. If, for any reason, the power supply falls unduly, instrument 29 disables the control of feed and operates a warning light 81. A circuit 83 periodically controls circuit 43 to increase the rate of feed so that the crusher is kept working near the upper limit of its working range.
