Abstract
922,659. Control of several D.C. motors. ELECTRO-HYDRAULICS Ltd. Dec. 20, 1961 [Jan. 10, 1961], No. 1081/61. Class 38 (3). An industrial truck has a divided battery I, 2, adapted for series or parallel connection, a traction motor 8, and auxiliary pump motors 13, 14, for tilting and lifting respectively. Initially, when the truck is stationary, the battery sections 1, 2 are connected in parallel. Closure of contacts 19 to select lifting energizes motor 14 and connects the sections 1, 2 in series, a resistor 17 providing smooth switching transition. A circuit is also completed for the pump motor 13. If switch 19 is returned to neutral and switch 21 is actuated, both pumps are driven at half-speed since the battery sections are connected in parallel. When the truck is driven slowly in either the forward or reverse direction, contacts 25 or 28 are open so that the battery sections are connected in parallel, and only half the maximum voltage can be applied to the pump motors. To drive the truck at full speed, contacts 32 are opened and contacts 31 are closed, whereby the battery sections are connected in series. Energization of pump motor 13 is prevented, but pump motor 14 may be operated by means of switch 19 or 22. In another arrangement an additional switch is provided to connect the battery sections in series when the truck is stationary and tilt is selected, the lift selector being in neutral when tilt is selected under these conditions. If lift and tilt are selected when the truck is stationary, both pump motors are driven but the battery sections are connected in parallel, Fig. 3 (not shown). In a further embodiment, a rectifier is included in the control circuit. When the truck is stationary and lift is selected, maximum voltage is applied to both pump motors; if tilt is selected and the lift selector is in neutral, the motor 13 is energized but the motor 14 does not run because the rectifier prevents energization of coil 37. If tilt and lift are selected simultaneously, both pump motors are driven and the battery sections are connected in series. When the truck is driven slowly and lift or tilt is selected, both pump motors are driven and the battery sections are connected in parallel. When the truck is driven fast and lift is selected the battery sections are connected in series and the motor 14 is energized. If tilt is selected, the motor 13 is not energized, Fig. 4 (not shown). The pump motors are prevented from starting simultaneously, thus reducing the peak load on the battery. The field windings of the motors may be tapped through electromagneticallyoperated contacts.
