Abstract

Coloured polyvinyl acetals or ketals may be stabilized with an organo-tin compound and a bisphenyl of the formula <FORM:0921968/IV(a)/1> R and R1 are alkyl radicals. The hydroxyl group in each phenyl radical is generally in the para-position and the phenyl radicals may be monochlorinated or monoalkylated by an alkyl radical with 1-3 carbon atoms. A large number of examples of organo-tin compounds are given including diorgano-tin oxides, triorgano-tin hydroxides, hexaorganodistannoxanes, tin alcoholates, tin carboxylates, chelated tin compounds, dialkyl- and trialkyl-tin acylates, organo- and diorgano-tin sulphides, organo-polytin sulphides, tin mercaptides, di- and tri-alkyl-tin thiomaleates and tin-mercaptobenzthiazole. Specified colouring matters are azodyestuff pigments. The proportion of stabilizer used may be between 0,1 to 5% for the bisphenol and 0,1 to 3% for the organo-tin compound both based on the weight of polymer used. The stabilizer may be incorporated at any stage in the production. In the examples a solution of polyvinylbutyral, triethylene-glycol di-(2-ethylbutyrate) as plasticizer, in methanol was stabilized by dibutyl-tin bis-(monobutyl maleate) and para:para1-dihydroxy-2:2-diphenyl-propane. Dyestuffs were added and the whole stirred until homogenous and then coated on a sheet of glass, heated for some time, and no discoloration occurred.
