An exothermic hot top is shaped as a hollow body which is open at the bottom and has a vent or pan hole at the top. The body may be of hemispherical shape 1, a segment of a hollow sphere, a hollow cylinder or rectangular prism. The exothermic material is backed by sand 3 bound with dextrine, resin or sodium silicate.
