Abstract
921,314. Spinning. CINCINNATI MILLING MACHINE CO. Jan. 9, 1962 [June 7, 1961], No. 780/62. Class 83 (4). A metal spinning machine having a plurality of work-forming tools for shaping a workpiece around a mandrel comprises a headstock on a base to hold and rotate said mandrel, and a plurality of spaced guide ways and lead screws extending from said headstock, a rigid box frame being held in alignment around said axis by said guideways said tools received in said box frame to transmit reactive forces thereto tending to balance one another when said tools are forced into contact with the workpiece, and actuating means being cooperative with said lead screws to move said box frame along said guide ways to effect forming contact between said tools and the workpiece. The machine rests on a base 10 provided with a rotatable driving plate 14 surrounded by spaced columns 12 each having a set of guide ways 16, 18 and a vertical lead screw 20. A top plate 24 is connected to the columns and the upper ends of the lead screws. Supported on the lead screws and slidable on the guide ways 16, 18 above the base 10 is a box frame 26 on which spin-forming tools 28 are supported on swivel spindles 30 for adjustment relatively to a mandrel 32. An adjustable tailstock 34 is supported on the lead screws above the box frame 26 and is laterally supported by the guideways 16, 18. The box frame 26 comprises front and rear rails 66 and side members 70, Fig. 3. Support brackets 77 fixed to the rails 66 accommodate rotatable nuts 80 which engage the lead screws 20. Each nut is connected to a synchro 81 and an hydraulic motor 82. Counter balance motors 83 are also connected to the nuts. The drive from the hydraulic motor 82 is connected to the nut 80 through gears 116, 118, 124, 126 and 80a, Fig. 4. The counter balance motors 83 are connected to the shafts 110 carrying the gears 116 and the synchros 81 are connected to the shafts 128 carrying the gears 126. The forming tools 28 are mounted on tool carriers 88, 90 transversely movable in slideways 84 in the box frame 26. The carriers are threadedly engaged with positioning screws 92 rotatable by hydraulic motors 98 controlled by either a tracer and template mechanism or by a programme control. The construction of the tailstock unit 34 is similar to that of the box frame 26.
