921,149. Magnetic drum data-storage apparatus. AUTOMATIC TELEPHONE & ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Nov. 15, 1961 [Dec. 7, 1960], No. 42081/60. Class 106 (1). A magnetic drum store in which the data words in a number of tracks are read in sequence and rewritten with or without modification depending on control bits in part of the word read has an auxiliary track with shorter recirculation time between read and write heads on which data from one of the tracks is duplicated so that the control bits of each word for processing are available at the previous word time. As shown, main tracks RTA-RTC store data words read at RHA-RHC and normally rewritten at WHA without modification; however, a control unit CP scans the words in each track in turn (switches SA-SC) and may modify them in units RPA-RPC. The control section of each word is read out last, but since switch SD is operated to write on auxiliary track AT the data in the next track to be scanned, each word will be available to the control unit via amplifier PA before it is read off the main track.
