Abstract

Organosilicon polymers are made by reacting, under moisture-free conditions, a silicon isocyanate of the formula RnSi(NCO)4-n or (RO)nSi(NCO)4-n, wherein n is 0, 1 or 2 and each R is a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, aryl or alkaryl group, with an organic compound whose molecule contains at least 2 reactive H atoms, e.g. ethylene and propylene glycols, glycerol, ethylene diamine, diamino toluene, polyethylene oxide ethers, polypropylene oxide ethers and polydiethylene glycol adipate. The reaction is effected by mixing the reactants together, with or without a solvent, and maintain the mixture with the temperature range of -20 DEG to 120 DEG C. for a period. In examples (1) di-t-butoxy silicon diisocyanate was added to 2:4-diamino toluene in dry dioxane, and the mixture was refluxed at 105 DEG C. to yield, when freed of solvent, a viscous liquid; (2) a branched chain polydiethylene glycol adipate was heated with Si(NCO)4 to yield a semitransparent rubbery polymer; (3) Si(NCO)4 was reacted with ethylene diamine in ether to yield a white powder which could be moulded under heat and pressure. Uses: For making laminates from glass fibre; for making mouldings; for water-proofing textiles; and for inclusion in paints, varnishes and foams. Specification 888,938 is referred to.
