920,150. Charging and discharging rotary hearth furnaces. SALEM-BROSIUS Inc. Oct. 27, 1961 [March 28, 1961], No. 38501/61. Class 51 (2). In a rotary hearth furnace having automatic charging and discharging means which deliver articles to a rotatable hearth and remove the same after heating, a control is provided comprising hearth travel measuring means generating electric pulses which are counted by counting means which in turn operate means controlling and co-ordinating the rotation of the hearth and the operation of the charging and discharging means. The drive to a rotatable hearth 11 is transmitted from a motor 17 through a reduction gear 18, drive shafts 19, 20, chain drives 21, 22 and final spur gears 25, 26 and is such that shafts 19, 20 rotate considerably faster than the hearth 11. A disc 28 with, for example, twenty holes 29 is mounted on and rotates with the shaft 20 and allows intermittent passage of light through the holes 29 from a source 32 to a photo-sensitive device 34b. The pulses of electricity generated by the device 34b are counted by two counting devices (Fig. 3, not shown) which in turn are linked with and may be preset to signal a control panel at a predetermined number of pulses. One of the two counting devices is used to control, by means of the control panel, the starting and stopping of the hearth in conjunction with the charging means 13 while the other counting device controls in a similar way the discharging of articles by discharging means 16. Thus a close and efficient control over the spacing on the hearth of billets 14, 15 is provided. A cycle time clock (Fig. 3, not shown) may also be included in the system to provide further time control of the hearth.
