919,481. Magnetic recording &c. apparatus. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 8, 1959 [June 7, 1958], No. 18261/58. Class 40 (2). [Also in Group XXXV] A system for recording and playing back television signals transversely of a magnetic tape 1 has a series of heads (not shown) moving in the direction 4 transducing video traces 2 and stationary heads transducing sound on a track 5a and drive synchronizing pulses on a track 6. To avoid overlap of signal in adjacent heads when recording, a region 5 is arranged to contain one line of the signal, and the line synchronizing pulse and a pulse derived from the rotation of the head carrier are applied to a coincidence circuit (Fig. 2, not shown), to transfer the video signal from one head to the next when the line synchronizing pulse occurs. Head-switching is not therefore required on playback. On both record and playback, a 50 c/s. synchronous motor 31 drives the tape, while the video heads are driven by a 400 c/s. synchronous motor 32 powered by an oscillator 45. On record, means, such as the photoelectric arrangements 33, 34, 35 record pulses, corresponding to movements of the heads on the record track 6. On playback, the switches 37, 39 are changed over and the outputs from the tape and from the cell 35 are compared and a difference signal used to so control the oscillator 45 as to maintain the video heads on their tracks.
