Abstract

919,152. Making crank-shafts; forging. FERTIGUNGSTECHNIK UND MASCHINENBAU G.m.b.H. GES. FUR. Dec. 30, 1959 [Dec. 30, 1958; April 9, 1959], No. 44193/59. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A hollow crank-shaft, Fig. 4, is made by radially swaging a tubular blank 1, Fig. 2, on a mandrel 2 to form coaxial journal and crankpin portions 4, 5 with intermediate enlarged web-forming portions 7, removing the mandrel and bending the web portions 7 to the required shape 7a, Fig. 4. The blank 1 is swaged by radially-acting hammers 3 with profiled inner ends 6, 8, 9. The ends of the blank are then closed by radial hammers 11, Fig. 3, and the web portions 7 are bent in a device which holds parallel the journals 4 and pins 5 whilst the journals 4 are bent in the direction 12. In another embodiment, Fig. 8, the tubular blank 1 has axial pressure applied thereto during swaging by a sleeve 18 carried by the mandrel 2 and a member 19. The mandrel 2 is mounted in an axially movable gripping head 20 to which the member 19 is connected by rods 21 passing through the forging box 22 which drives the hammers 3. Alternatively axial pressure may be applied by a nut screwed on a threaded end of the mandrel, Fig. 6 (not shown), or by a sleeve forced thereon, Fig. 7 (not shown).
