919,078. Making pneumatic tyres. BRIDGESTONE TIRE KABUSHIKI KAISHA. Dec. 7, 1959, No. 41438/59. Class 144 (1). [Also in Groups V and VIII] Pneumatic tyre carcases are made by drawing a number of metal cords C from spools 1 through safety devices 2 and thence in parallel side-byside relation through a preheater 3 and a rubber extruder 4 to form a flat rubber-coated tape of parallel cords which is then passed via festooning means 6 to a winding-machine 9 which winds the tape in contiguous side-by-side convolutions on a drum 10, Fig. 6, to form an integral band, the band then being cut at an angle to the circumferential, such as along a groove 28 on the drum 10, Fig. 7c (not shown), to form a sheet which is further cut on the bias into pieces of the desired size which are finally plied up on a building tyre former to make the carcase. The safety device 2 comprises a gauge 2a through which the cord C is drawn, the gauge being slidably mounted on guides 2f, Fig. 3a, between opposing springs 2b and being pivotally connected to one end of a pivoted lever 2d, the other end of which is disposed to operate a stop switch 2c to stop the cord drive in the event of the gauge 2a being displaced by a kink or the like in the cord. The winding-machine 9 comprises a fixed cord guide frame 25 mounted adjacent a rotatable winding drum 10 which is carried, for traverse of the guide frame, on a carriage 11 running on rails 13. Movement of the carriage 11 is effected by a screw-shaft 21 journalled in the fixed frame and rotatable by a slidably keyed sprocket 20 driven from the drum driving motor 14 on the carriage 11, the shaft co-operating with a half nut 22 which is carried by the carriage 11 and is detachably engageable with the shaft. Limit switches 23, 23<SP>1</SP> stop the traversing movement of the carriage in each direction.
