Abstract
919,060. Thermionic engines. SIEMENSSCHUCKERTWERKE A.G. Dec. 19, 1960 [Dec. 19, 1959], No. 43661/60. Class 39 (1). A thermoelectronic energy converter comprises an exhausted or plasma-filled envelope containing an electrode 1 which is heated, an electrode 3 which is cooled and an intermediate electrode 2 which subdivides the converter into two series-connected half-cells. The work functions of electrodes 1, 2, 3 may be 3, 2 and 1.5 eV. respectively, and electrodes 1 and 3 may be maintained at 2,200 and 700‹ K. respectively, the consequent temperature of electrode 2 being 1500‹ K. The voltage drops across resistances R 12 and R 23 are preferably equal to the differences between the work functions of the associated electrodes.
