Abstract

A growth-promoting supplement for animal feed comprises a compound of structure <FORM:0918409/I/1> in which n is 1-9, and Y and Z each represent hydrogen, or, taken together, an additional carbon bond, such compounds being termed ubiquinones. The concentration of ubiquinone in the final feed is 1-100 mg./kg. the ubiquinone may be enveloped in gelatine. A carrier such as starch or oatmeal may be employed for distribution of the ubiquinone in the final feed. The carrier material may be sprayed with a solution of the ubiquinone in a food oil. An example is of a poultry feed made by mixing 800 mg. of a gelatine product containing 8 mg. of 2, 3-dimethoxy-5-methyl-6-[3, 7, 11, 15, 19, 23, 27, 31, 35, 39-decamethyl-tetracontadecaen-(2, 6, 10, 14, 18, 22, 26, 30,-34, 38)-yl]-benzoquinone-(1, 4) (n is 9; Y and Z a double bond) into 1 kg. of a formulation of oil-extracted soya bean meal, sucrose, zein, DL methionine, choline chloride, iodinated casein (1% thyroxine), a specified salt mixture and a specified vitamin mixture in sucrose; a second example is of a poultry feed made by mixing 1000 mg. of a gelatine product containing 10 mg. of 2, 3-dimethoxy-5-methyl-6 phytyl-benzo-quinone-(1, 4) (n is 3; Y and Z are H) into a specified vitamin mixture in sucrose and distributing this supplemented vitamin mixture in 1 kg. of a formulation of oil-extracted soya bean meal, sucrose, zein, DL methionine, choline chloride, iodinated casein (1% thyroxine) and a specified salt mixture.
