Abstract

918,250. Sausage casings. BRITISH & COLONIAL CASING CO. Ltd. May 2, 1961 [May 16, 1960; June 21, 1960], Nos. 17263/60 and 21775/60. Class 28 (2). [Also in Group XVII] A process of packaging sausage casings comprises spooling the cleaned casings on to substantially rigid carriers to leave the ends of the carriers exposed and securing together a plurality of loaded carriers. The bundles of carriers may then be sealed in a bag. The casings 11 are spooled by pulleys 13, 14, either directly on to the carriers 16 which may be rods or tubes or on to a dummy nozzle 12 from which they are slid on to the carrier. A number of carriers are then bundled together by a device shown in Fig. 3. The device comprises a pair of string holders 18 which hold the ends of a string 19. The carriers, having a transverse hole through each end, are pushed on to the device so that the holders 18 pass through the holes. The ends of the string are then tied together and the bundle (Fig. 4) removed and placed in a plastic bag. A quantity of salt or brine may also be enclosed in the bag. The carriers are removed from the bag and the sausage casings are slid off on to the nozzle of the sausage machine. Alternatively, if the carrier is a tube it may fit over the nozzle and the sausage meat is passed through the tube. A tubular adapter (Fig. 7, not shown) may be used if the filling nozzle is a different size. The carriers may have longitudinal grooves or, if the carriers are tubular may be provided with perforations, to facilitate soaking the casings before they are removed from the carriers.
