Abstract
918,119. Liquefying gases. CONCH INTERNATIONAL METHANE Ltd. Sept. 29, 1961, No.35060/61. Class 8(2). A method for producing liquefied natural gas from gaseous natural gas that is under pressure comprises liquefying the gaseous natural gas by mechanical refrigeration, reducing the pressure on the liquefied natural gas in an expansion, stage to obtain colder liquefied natural gas and colder gaseous natural gas, taking off the colder liquefied natural gas as product, and compressing the colder gaseous natural gas, liquefying it by indirect heat exchange with liquid nitrogen, and taking it off as product. As described, compressed gaseous natural gas is liquefied by being passed by means of a conduit 1 through a mechanical refrigeration system 2, the refrigeration therein being for example by means of a cascade method using methane, ethane and propane as described and claimed in Specification 852,844. The liquefied natural gas leaving the system 2 passes successively through expansion chambers 3, 7, 11, 15 and 19 and is delivered in a colder state to a conduit 21; the gaseous natural gas obtained in the expansion chambers is passed through compressors 22, 24, 26, 28 and 30, the gas from each of the expansion chambers 19, 15, 11 and 7 being compressed to the pressure of the preceding expansion chamber and added to the gas obtained from the latter. The natural gas issuing from the compressor 30 passes through to a compressor 32 to a conduit 33; part of the natural gas then passes through a conduit 34 to the refrigeration system 2 where it mixes with rest of the gas which has been cooled and in part liquefied by indirect heat exchange with cold nitrogen gas in heat exchangers 42 and 43. The natural gas leaving the system 2 is in part liquefied and passes from the system 2 through heat exchangers 36 and 38, part of the gas flowing through each heat exchanger, for liquefaction and delivery by way of an expansion valve 40. The heat exchanger 38 is supplied with liquid nitrogen gas through a conduit 39, the nitrogen gas thereafter passing through the heat exchanger 43, an expander 44 and the heat exchangers 36 and 42 to atmosphere.
