Abstract

917,714. Determining the liquid content of vapour streams. ESSO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CO. Sept. 22, 1961 [Oct.12, 1960], No. 34939/60. Class 97 (3). The enthalpy of a vapour stream at temperature T H taken from a header 1 through line 2 is determined by cooling the vapour stream to a temperature T 1 in a heat exchanger 3 so that the vapour stream is condensed completely to the liquid phase, further cooling the stream in a second heat exchanger 8 to a temperature T c , recycling the cold liquid stream through line 4 to heat exchanger 3 so that it is heated substantially to temperature T 1 and determining T 1 - T c such as by thermocouples 11, 12 and galvanometer 13. The proportion of liquid phase present in the vapour stream, e.g. the dryness of steam, is then determined by reference to a calibration chart. In a modification the recycled cold liquid stream is circulated several times through the heat exchangers to enable the dryness of steam to be determined over the full range of 0-100%.
