Abstract
917,515. Slide rules &c. WORMAN, G. M. [Representative of WORMAN, W. M.]. Nov. 8, 1961 [Nov. 8, 1960], No. 38246/60. Class 106 (1). A calculating device of the rotary slide-rule type is used to solve problems such as where k is a known constant and l, c, d are variables corresponding to e.g. the length, circumference and density, respectively, of cigarettes. The constant k is indicated by an arrow 13, which may be movable, on a longarithmic scale 11 of an outer disc 4. An indicated radial unity line, 9, of a logarithmic scale 7 on an inner rotatable disc 3 is aligned with the indicator 13, and the reading line 2 of a rotatable arm 1 is positioned above the value I on the scale 7. The arm is held in this position whilst the indicator 9 is brought into line with it. The arm is then released, moved, and held in position above the value c on an inner logarithmic scale 10, on disc 3 and of limited range ; the value c<SP>2</SP> being indicated at the same angular position on scale 7. The indicator is aligned with the reading line 2. The arm is then moved to the value d on scale 7 and the answer is read from scale 11 at this position. . Cylindrical members may be used instead of discs.
