Abstract

917,233. Coated polyamide films. BRITISH CELLOPHANE Ltd. Nov. 22, 1961 [Dec. 12, 1960], No.42715/60. Class 140. Heat-sealable. moistureproof wrapping material is produced by coating at least one side of a polyamide film with a coating composition comprising (a) an organic solvent soluble vinylidene chloride copolymer prepared by copolymerizing vinylidene chloride with one or more copolymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomers wherein the vinylidene chloride monomer is present in an amount within the range 85 to 95% by weight and (b) between 1 and 40% by weight based on the weight of the vinylidene chloride copolymer of a polymeric product obtained by the copolymerization of 80 to 95% by weight vinyl chloride, 5 to 20% by weight vinyl acetate with or without up to 2% by weight of maleic acid or maleic acid anhydride, dissolved in a volatile organic solvent, followed by removal of the solvent by evaporation. The polyamide film may be a film of polycaprolactam, polycapryllactam, or poly-11-amino-undecanoic acid. The vinylidene chloride monomer may be copolymerized with acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate or alkyl esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid in which the alkyl group contains 1 to 4 carbon atoms. The monomeric mixture from which the vinylidene chloride copolymer is prepared may also include one or more unsaturated acidic compounds selected from citraconic acid, citraconic acid anhydride, itaconic acid, itaconic acid anhydride, mesaconic acid, acrylic acid and methacrylic acid. The volatile organic solvent may be methyl ethyl ketone, dioxane, dimethylformamide or tetrahydrofuran with a suitable aromatic diluent such as benzene, toluene or xylene, or a mixture of such solvents. The coating composition may include a stop agent and/or an antiblocking agent such as a solid ketone having at least one alkyl group comprising a straight chain of at least 8 carbon atoms, e.g. laurone, with or without a finely divided polymer or copolymer of vinyl chloride or a finely divided organic derivative of hydrous aluminium silicate mineral or finely divided silica as disclosed in Specifications 766,708 and 871,840.
