Abstract
Organic compounds containing an epoxy group and a polymerizable double bond are graft polymerized on the surface of a natural or synthetic polymer, and the resulting graft polymer is treated with a compound containing active hydrogen which is capable of opening up the epoxy group. The epoxy group-containing compound may be one having the formula <FORM:0916529/IV(a)/1> in which R1, R2 and R3 are hydrogen atoms or alkyl or aryl groups and A is an ether bond, an ester bond or a urethane bond, e.g. vinyl glycidyl ether, glycidyl acrylate and methacrylate and vinyl glycidyl urethane. Polymers specified are polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, polytetrafluoroethylene, polyesters, polyamides, polyurethanes, polysulphides, polyacetals, diene polymers and polymers containing silicon or titanium. The polymers may be used in the form of a fibre, film or other shaped article. Grafting may take place under the influence of gamma rays or ultra-violet light, or the polymer may be activated by treatment with ozone. The grafting monomer may be used as such, in solution in a solvent which may or may not swell the base material, or in admixture with another monomer. The compound used to react with the epoxy groups of the graft polymer is preferably an amine, hydroxyamine, or an amino-acid. Lists of such compounds are provided, preferred being diethylamine, ethylene diamine, monoethanolamine, diethanolamine, hydroxylamine, m-aminophenol, 2-(31-phenoxy-21-hydroxypropylamino) ethanol and the sodium salts of alanine, lysine and leucine. The resulting products show improved dyeability, printability and hygroscopicity as compared with the base materials.
