Abstract
916,067. Radio reflectors. DEL MAR ENGINEERING LABORATORIES. July 18, 1961, No. 26037/61. Class 40 (7). [Also in Group XXXIII] A radar-reflective towed target has a hollow stream-lined body adapted to rotate continuously in flight, and forward end, rearward end and intermediate reflector assemblies provided within the body, the forward and rearward end assemblies comprising forwardly and rearwardly directed corner assemblies respectively and the intermediate assembly comprising four reflecting surfaces 90 degrees apart extending longitudinally of the said body and transverse reflecting surfaces at the two ends of the said four surfaces forming first and second sets of circumferentially spaced corner reflectors with axes of symmetry inclined forwardly and rearwardly respectively at angles to the said longitudinal axis. The target comprises a body 10 divided into sections 10a, 10b 10c and 10d, the nose section 10a carrying a balance weight 14 and a swivel 12 for a towing cable 13 whereby the body may be free to rotate continuously by the action of airflow on bent tips 16 to fins 15. Faired casings 18 support flares ignited by remote control and the body is divided by panels 25, 40 and 40 to form compartments for radar reflective panel assemblies and radio equipment, as shown in Fig. 2. The forward assembly A comprises three intersecting panels 28, 30, 32 mounted on panel 25 and profiled to the nose shape of the body. The central assembly comprises four longitudinal panels 38 mutually at 90 degrees and the rear assembly and the rear assembly panels 48, 50, 52 mutually at 90 degrees and meeting at a common point on the longitudinal axis adjacent panel 42. All panels may be foam plastic coated with metal foil and the compartment between panels 25 and 40 houses a power pack 22 and radio receiver 24, dipole antennµ being positioned between panels 38. The end reflector assemblies may be reversed and the body 10 is constructed of moulded paper impregnated with a waterproofing agent.
