Flat bags 33 in a stack in a magazine 7 are separated sequentially and transferred to a continuously moving conveyer 8 by a number of rotatable pick-up heads each including a blade 1 which is inserted within a bag by a sliding vertical movement, and the bag is conveyed away by the head which remains always in a vertical position. When a blade 1 is inserted into a bag, a pair of gripper arms 25 is actuated to grip the bag against the blade to assist the removal and conveyance of the bag. As shown, there are four heads each comprising an arm 2 pivoted on a fixed central shaft 13, the arms being so shaped that their outer portions rotate in the same vertical plane. Each arm 2 has a bearing 23 for a pin 21 which carries a holder 28 for the blade 1 at one end, and forms a bearing spindle at the other end for a satellite gear 3. The gear 3 meshes with an intermediate gear 4, and the latter meshes with a sun-wheel 5 secured to the fixed shaft 13, all the gears being of the same diameter. The arms 2 are rotated about the shaft 13 by a gear-driven rectangular plate 10 which has four cranks 18 each slotted at the outer end to engage a pin on an arm 2. Since the planetary gears 3, 4, 5 are of the same size, the gears 3 do not rotate, and the blades 1 mounted on the gears 3 thus remain vertical. Each arm 2 is arranged to be accelerated and retarded in its rotation about the shaft 13 by a constantly-rotating control cam 6 which acts on crank arms 17 and the cranks 18 secured to the drive-plate 10; thus the speed of the arms 2 can be adjusted at the bag pick-up and delivery positions. The pin 21 connected to the blade holder 28 is also connected to V-shaped element 20 which, as the arm 2 rotates, abuts rigid cam elements or, as shown, engages between rollers 32 of a control lever 22 which move the pin 21 and blade 1 horizontally and hold it there during the rotation of the arm 2. The hub 23 on the arm 2 has a cam track 24 thereon engaged by a roller 27 on an arm pivoted on the blade holder 28 at 26. A pair of gripper arms 25 as also mounted on the pivot 26, so that as the pin 21 and holder 28 are moved horizontally, the grippers 25 clamp a bag against the blade 1 and hold it clamped until the bag is released at the delivery position. The bag 33 is released on a reciprocating support-plate 30 which is moved at the same speed as the delivery chains 8, and the bag is placed by the plate between holders 31 on the chains which conveys it to a bag-filling &c. machine.
