Abstract
Thermoplastic products are prepared by reacting (i) a dihydroxy compound with a substantially equimolar amount of (ii) a diepoxy compound, where either (i) or (ii) or both contain an SO2 group joining two aromatic nuclei, in the presence of an alkaline compound as catalyst, and in a solvent in which (i), (ii) and the product are at least partly soluble and which is substantially non-reactive with (i) or (ii), the reaction mixture being substantially free from water, the nature and quantity of the solvent and the temperature being such that the product remains dissolved in the mixture until the product has an intrinsic viscosity (measured in dimethyl formamide) of at least 0,4. The only dihydroxy compounds disclosed are all phenols, and the only epoxy compounds disclosed are all diglycidyl ethers of dihydric phenols: phenols suitable for (i) or (ii) are (a) di-phenylol sulphones and (b) 2,2-di-p-phenylol propane, di-p-phenylol methane, hydroquinone, resorcinol, 3,31- and 4,41-dihydroxy diphenyl and unspecified dihydroxy diphenyl ethanes and dihydroxy naphthalenes. List of suitable solvents are given, suitable classes being ketones, nitriles, nitro compounds, sulphoxides and sulphones; acetophenone and tetramethylene sulphone are used in the examples. The preferred catalyst is the alkali (e.g. Na), alkaline earth or quaternary ammonium salt of the dihydroxy compound. In Examples 3 and 4 further polymerization is prevented by the addition of p,p1-diphenylolsulphone. The polymer is obtained in the form of a crystalline powder, and may be drawn, spun or woven to produce threads, fibres or fabrics.
