[Also in Groups XXXII and XXXVI] A counterpoise device (see Group XXXVI) has a weight movable along an arm of non-circular cross-section ; the weight having the form of a coiled spring 28 whose convolutions are non-circular and of similar cross-section such that when unstressed each convolution is progressively angularly displaced from its neighbours, the spring being compressible so that the convolutions are rotated into alignment to allow passage of the arm and relaxable to firmly grip the arm in any desired position.
