Abstract
915,515. Aircraft. WHARTON, W. Feb. 29, 1960 [March 4, 1959], No. 7538/59. Class 4. An aircraft comprises a passenger platform 1, support members 2 extending upwardly from the periphery of platform 1, an aerofoil 3 mounted on the upper ends of members 2 and having a central opening and being circular in plan and having a horizontal centre portion 4 and a vertical edge portion 5, a motor 12 mounted on platform 1 and means for driving, from the motor, fan blades 13 mounted above aerofoil 3 so as to discharge air down over the aerofoil to impart lift, the drive means including a clutch adapted, upon failure of the motor, to disengage to allow fan blades 13 to be rotated by the passage of air upwardly through the central opening. Engine 12 drives two contra-rotating sets of fan blades 13, disposed within a cowling 14, through gears 8, 9 and 10 and concentric shafts 6 and 7. Air is thereby discharged over the aerofoil 4, which has apertures 16 to control the air pressure under the aerofoil. Concentric ring elements 15, of aerofoil section, and adjustable flaps 17 assist in controlling the airflow, and adjustable vanes 18 minimise rotation of the aircraft due to torque reaction. Flaps 20, closed in normal flight, are opened by the upward rush of air that would occur if the aircraft should fall, due to engine failure, and the fan blades are thereby kept rotating to check the rate of descent.
