A method of making a lipstick-supporting cup for lipstick holders comprises feeding a metal strip through a series of work stations to form a plurality of spaced notches along one edge, punching a radial projection, severing a notched and punched portion at a further work station to produce a complementary male and female dovetail in the severed ends, bending the strip about a mandrel to form a cylinder with a dovetailed peripheral wall and finally bending the end teeth inwards to form a closure at one end of the cylinder. A series of teeth 17, transverse indentations 19 and a dimple 18 between the indents and in the opposite direction to them are formed in a strip which is fed in a vertical plane through a machine 11. When the strip is adjacent to a mandrel 13 it is diesevered to produce complementary dovetails 14, 15. Forming jaws 20, 21, 22, 23 having steps 25, 26 then advance to bend the blank about the mandrel 13, interlock the dovetails and bend the teeth 17 inwards to form the bottom of a cup-shaped member. The cup is ejected either by a ring sliding along the mandrel or by the mandrel moving in a fixed block. The teeth 17 may be triangular or trapezoidal depending on whether the bottom of the cup is to be completely or partially closed and if only some of the teeth are triangular their ends may be bent upwards to project parallel with the axis of the cup.
