Abstract
914,954. Beams; scaffold planks. T.E. CONSTRUCTION Ltd. June 12, 1959 [June 17, 1958], No. 19378/58. Classes 20 (2) and 20 (4). A timber beam comprises a longitudinal web 1, Fig. 1, of plywood, reinforcing members 2 of solid timber extending along the longitudinal edges of the web and secured to one side, Fig. 8 (not shown), or to both sides, so that an outer edge face of each reinforcing member presents a laterally-protruding flange surface along the adjacent longitudinal edge of the web, each of said members having also an inner edge face which is inclined laterally and outwardly from the web in a direction towards said outer edge face, said beam comprising also between the members 2, spaced apart transverse stiffening members 4 each being arranged substantially perpendicular to the associated members 2 and having opposite inclined end faces secured in abutting relation to the inner edge faces of the members 2, each member 4 having its inner face engaging the web 1 and its outer face located substantially flush with or in the same plane as the laterally outer faces, Figs. 3 and 5 (not shown), or edges, of the members 2. A number of embodiments are described and shown wherein one or more beam members according to the invention are incorporated in preformed composite beam members or preformed structural units, or in building structures such as roofs or ceilings. In a further embodiment the beam is employed as a decking unit for scaffolding for which purpose the web 118, Fig. 39, is provided with reinforcing members 117 and stiffening members 119 on the under-side only, the upper side of the web being provided with timber strips 120 and the under-sides of the members 117 being longitudinally grooved along their lower faces to receive steel wires 122 extending between steel end-plates 123.
