Abstract

914,915. Making sparking plugs; jointing by stamping. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Oct. 27, 1961 [Nov. 17, 1960], No. 38519/61. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A method of sealing an insulator in a metal shell, e.g. in the manufacture of igniter plugs for internal combustion engines and turbines comprises inserting the ceramic insulator 20 in the metal shell 10, cold crimping the upper portion of the shell by means of a die 28, Fig. 2, to obtain a partial seal between the insulator and the shell, heating only the upper portion of the shell from a source of electric power 32, Fig. 3, and hot crimping said upper portion using a die 30 to obtain a positive seal between the insulator and the shell. The insulator seats on a sealing gasket 22 and an upper gasket 24 is fitted between the tapered upper end of the insulator and the shell. During the crimping operation the shell is held in a work-holder 26. Finally, the crimped portion 34 of the shell is machined so that its upper surface is parallel to the lower surface of the shell and a metal shielding barrel 36, Fig. 4, is welded to said machined surface.
