Abstract
Copolymers of ethylene and an alpha-olefine of the formula R-CH=CH2 where R is an alkyl radical containing not more than 8 carbon atoms, and optionally an acrylic non-conjugated diene of the formula <FORM:0914884/IV(a)/1> where R1 is an alkylene radical, R2 and R3 each represent a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical, and R4 is an alkyl radical, are made by copolymerizing a mixture of the monomers at a temperature of -20 DEG to 15 DEG C. in tetrachloroethylene in the presence of a catalyst prepared from (a) vanadium tetrachloride or oxytrichloride and (b) an aluminium trialkyl or the reaction product of an aluminium trialkyl with an aluminium trihalide in a molar ratio of 1:0,5 to 1. The Specification contains lists of the comonomers. Specified copolymers are ethylene/propylene, ethylene/1-butene, ethylene/1-heptene, ethylene/1-decene, ethylene/propylene/1-butene, ethylene/1-pentene/1-octene, ethylene/5-methyl -1-hexene, ethylene/4-methyl-1-pentene/5,6,6-trimethyl-1-heptene, ethylene/1-butene/1-pentene/1-nonene, ethylene/propylene/1,4 hexadiene, ethylene/1- butene/1,4-hexadiene/11-ethyl-1,11-tridecadiene, ethylene/1-butene/1-octene/6-methyl -1,5-heptadiene, and ethylene/1-pentene/1,4-hexadiene/1,9-octadecadiene. The catalyst may be formed in the presence of all of the monomers, in the presence of only the diene, or in the absence of all monomers. The copolymers may be recovered by conventional techniques. The monomers may be purified, e.g. gases by passing them through silica gel columns and scrubbers containing triisobutyl aluminium and liquids by fractional distillation and passage through silica gel. Monomers, catalyst may be introduced portionwise into the polymerization zone. The copolymers can be vulcanized in the presence of carbon black and conventional sulphur and nitrogen-containing vulcanizing agents. The copolymerization may be effected continuously and the Specification contains a flow diagram of such a process.
