Abstract

Halogenated dihydroxy - dinitro - anthraquinones are prepared by treating 1:5dihydroxy-4:8-dinitro- or 1:8-dihydroxy-4:5dinitro-anthraquinones or a mixture thereof with a halogen in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide. The products may be reduced to give anthraquinone dyes (see Group IV(c)). In examples the dihydroxy-dinitroanthraquinones specified above are treated in aqueous or aqueous methanolic sodium hydroxide solution with chlorine or bromine to give the2:6-dibromo- and -dichloroderivatives.ALSO:Halogenated dihydroxydiaminoanthra quinone dyes are obtained by the reduction, for example, with hydrazine, of halogenated 1 : 5-dihydroxy-4 : 8-dinitro- or 1 : 8-dihydroxy-4 : 5-dinitro-anthraquinones or a mixture thereof (see Group IV(b)). The dyes give blue shades on cellulose acetate and polyester fibres. In examples the reduction products of the 2 : 6-dibromo- and -dichloro-compounds are described.
