Abstract
914,565. Endless record-tape magazines. CAILLIOT, S. Oct. 19, 1961 [Oct. 21, 1960; Sept. 28, 1961], No. 37543/61. Class 40 (2). An endless tape magazine for magnetic or other tape and adapted to be placed over a gramophone turntable for drive purposes as generally described in Specification 775,532 has a number of rollers 19-21 of varying diameters driven at equal angular speeds by discs 22a to support and drive the coiled tape (of which only four turns are indicated in Fig. 2). A member 33, mounted to the turntable, provides a tape-capstan surface 47 and supports a tyre 33a driving the rollers 22a. The placement of the smaller-diameter, braking rollers 21 and the larger-diameter, accelerating roller 20 with respect to the sprung guide-roller 27 at the inner take-off point of the tape coil and the tape-pulley arrangement 12, driven by a standard-diameter roller 19a together prevent the stored coil becoming elliptical with resulting increased friction. A control member 3, when actuated clockwise, applies a pinch-roller 23 to the capstan, releases a tape-clamp 31, which presses the coil against the lid 1 and unlatches means 39 holding the member 33 against the body 35 and further means engaging pins 53 to prevent relative rotation during transport. The tape, where magnetic, may be double-sided and spliced into a Mobius loop to double the playing time and the head 6, which may be double-track for stereophonic use, may be movable to engage alternative tracks on the tape. A lead 7, connects the head to a socket which may be covered by the member 3 and from which connection may be made to record/playback amplifiers &c. The cassette may also be used with conventional tape-recorders (Fig. 5, not shown).
