A vending machine, particularly for vending cartons of milk, has a refrigerated cabinet containing one or more storage columns, each comprising a helical ramp 16 and a shaft 12 with radial division plates 15 and the ramp and shaft are relatively rotatable in steps by coin-freed mechanism contained in a compartment 10 on the outside of the cabinet door 6. As shown, the shaft 12 is rotatable and the ramp 16 is normally fixed but is mounted on rotatable plates 19, 20 so that by release of a pin 21 it can be rotated for loading of the column. A helical wall guide 17 may be provided as a separate fixed part or as part of the ramp 16. Each column is indexed by a separate handle 27 having a spiral cam 24 which acts on pushrods 29, 32 to cause a pawl 36 to engage the radial plates 15. A pin 48 on each cam wheel engages in a corresponding slot 47 in a slidable bar 38 and moves it so that an inserted coin 49 lifts a stop pawl 44 from a step 43 and allows full movement of the bar and handle. The other handles are prevented from being rotated since their pins 48 lie in recesses 46 extending from the slots 47. Coin pushers 54 on the bar 38 deliver change coins to a tray 53. A light 56 indicates when a column is empty and is connected to switches at the bottom of the columns, each switch being held in the " off " position by the weight of a carton.
