[Also in Groups XXXV and XL (b)] Orientation variations in a web of mesh material are corrected by sensing photo-electrically a diffraction pattern formed by transmission of light through the mesh and using the output to control a differential gear 51 in a shaft driving stenter chains 52. The shaft is driven by a further shaft 53 through differential gearing 55.
