Abstract

Textile materials of aromatic polyesters are coloured with dyestuffs of the monoazo, styrene and nitro series which are devoid of -SO3H- and -COOH groups but which contain a group of the formula <FORM:0914075/IV (b)/1> attached to an aromatic nucleus directly or through a group -N(R)R2-, -OR2-, -SO2R2-, -R2-, -SO2NHR2-, -SO2N (Alkyl)R2-, -CONHR2- or -CON(Alkyl) R2-, wherein Z1, Z2 and Z3 are hydrogen or halogen atoms or hydrocarbon radicals which may be substituted, R2 is a saturated or unsaturated chain of 1-6 C atoms which may be substituted and R is an alkyl, substituted alkyl, aralkyl or aryl group or a group of the formula <FORM:0914075/IV (b)/2> Alternatively these dyes may be deposited by applying water-soluble dyes of the above type but containing a group of the formula <FORM:0914075/IV (b)/3> attached as above, wherein Y is an anion and B is the residue of a strong tertiary base, which dyestuffs are transformed into the insoluble form above by elimination of the quaternary ammonium group. Specified substituents: Z1, Z2 Z3 are chlorine, bromine, methyl, ethyl, phenyl, p-tolyl, p-chlorphenyl and propenyl; specified for R2 are -(CH2)2-, -(CH2)3-, -(CH2)5-, -(CH2)6- and <FORM:0914075/IV (b)/4> specified for R are methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, b -cyano-ethyl, benzyl, b -phenylethyl, phenyl and p-tolyl; specified for N=B are pyridine, the picolines, quinoline, the lepidines, N-methyl- and N-ethyl-morpholine, trimethylamine, triethylamine and N : N-dimethylbenzylamine. The insoluble dyes may be stabilized in aqueous dispersion with, e.g., dinaphthylmethane disodium sulphonate. Dyeing may be carried out in both cases, i.e. in aqueous dispersion or solution, in the presence of a carrier at or near the boil or above 100 DEG C. at superatmospheric pressure or alternatively by padding and subsequently thermofixing at temperatures above 170 DEG . Printing may be effected with a printing paste containing normal tthickness and other adjuvents followed by steaming. After treatments in weakly alkaline hydrosulphite and soap or synthetic detergents may be included. The water-soluble dyestuffs may be prepared in a manner similar to that described in Specification 914,074. The water-insoluble dyestuffs may be obtained from their water-soluble counterparts by the action of cold sodium hydroxide or by refluxing the appropriate b -chloropropionyloxy compound with triethylamine or N-ethylmorpholine in di-oxane. Examples are given of dyeing and printing and of the preparation of a number of dyes including 4-nitro-41-(N-methyl-N-b -acryloxyethylamino)-azobenzene, 4-(N-methyl-N-b -acryloxyethylamino)- b -cyano-b -carbamyl styrene and their water-soluble equivalents, <FORM:0914075/IV (b)/5> <FORM:0914075/IV (b)/6> and 2-nitro-4-(b -acryloyloxyethylcarbamyl) -41-methyldiphenylamine and its water soluble pyrimidium chloride equivalent.
