Abstract

913,130. Automatic voltage-control. GREILLER, R., and KUPPERS, K. Oct. 19, 1960 [Oct. 30, 1959], No. 35870/60. Class 38 (4). A regulating circuit for D.C. systems comprises a plurality of sources connected in series for providing the input voltage, a regulating transistor connected in series or parallel with one of the said sources supplying a voltage smaller than the permissible collector-emitter voltage of the regulating transistor, and a switch connected in parallel with the said series or parallel circuit, the arrangement being such that the switch closes on overload so that the transistor is not subjected to a destructive over-voltage from the other input voltage sources. As shown, a transistor 3 is connected in series with the load and with a source 1 supplying on unregulated voltage U 1 , the total input voltage U 3 comprising voltage U 1 and a voltage U 2 supplied from a source 2 connected in series with the source 1. A switch 4 is connected in parallel with the series circuit of transistor 3 and source 1. The output voltage U 4 is compared with a reference source, e.g. a Zener diode, in a discriminator 6, any resulting error signal being applied over an amplifier 5 to the base of transistor 3 the conductance of which is thereby varied so that U 4 is maintained constant. On overload, switch 4 closes so that voltage U 2 is prevented from being applied to the transistor 3 which is thereby protected; at the same time a resulting signal from amplifier 5 is arranged to bias the transistor 3 to cut-off. The switch 4 may be a silicon diode arranged to become conducting when the output voltage decreases, because of overloading, below the potential of voltage source 2. A regulating system of the shunt transistor type is also described (Fig. 3, not shown).
