Abstract

Solid material, e.g. caustic soda, aluminium oxide, milk powder, egg powder, is separated in a finely-divided state from admixture with liquids by means of an evaporator comprising a cylindrical vessel 1 heated by jackets 2, a rotary shaft 3 carrying a circular trough 10d for distributing the liquid composition over the upper end of the inner surface of the evaporator, and wipers 6 mounted on pivots 7 between rings 20 attached to arms 21 which extend radially at spaced intervals along the rotary shaft. As the shaft rotates, an edge of each wiper presses <PICT:0912922/III/1> against the hot inner surface, and the liquid is spread out in thin layers as it flows downwards. The thickness of the wipers, and therefore the contact-pressure against the inner surface, increases in a downward direction (cf. Figs. 2 and 5). Thus there is a series of evaporating zones, and the thickness of the liquid layer in any zone (except the uppermost) is less than the thickness of the layer in the immediately preceding zone. Alternatively, the desired change in thickness of the liquid layers can be obtained by providing wipers that extend different distances inwardly from their pivots, as shown in Fig. 6. The liquid is introduced into the evaporator through inlets 15; and the evaporated vapours leave through discharge 18. The dry solid is discharged in powder form through opening 17. Example 1 relates to the evaporation of a 50% solution of caustic soda at a temperature of 200 DEG C. and an absolute pressure of 25 mm. Hg. Example 2 relates to the evaporation of a suspension of aluminium oxide in toluene.
